چکیده

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of oral administration of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) on surface electromyogram (SEMG) activity from the vastus lateralis (VL) during repeated cycling sprints (RCS). Subjects performed two RCS tests (ten 10-s sprints) interspersed with both 30-s and 360-s recovery periods 1 h after oral administration of either NaHCO3 (RCSAlk) or CaCO3 (RCSPla) in a random counterbalanced order. Recovery periods of 360 s were set before the 5th and 9th sprints. The rate of decrease in plasma HCO3 concentration during RCS was significantly greater in RCSAlk than in RCSPla, but the rates of decline in blood pH during the two RCS tests were similar. There was no difference between change in plasma lactate concentration in RCSAlk and that in RCSPla. Performance during RCSAlk was similar to that during RCSPla. There were no differences in oxygen uptake immediately before each cycling sprint (preV . O2) and in SEMG activity between RCSAlk and RCSPla. In conclusion, oral administration of NaHCO3 did not affect SEMG activity from the VL. This suggests that the muscle recruitment strategy during RCS is not determined by only intramuscular pH.

Effect of sodium bicarbonate ingestion upon repeated sprints.

The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of sodium bicarbonate ingestion upon repeated bouts of intensive short duration exercise. Twenty-three subjects participated in the investigation (8 females and 15 males, age 21.4 +/- 2.3, mean +/- sd). Subjects completed six trials; three following the ingestion of sodium bicarbonate (300 mg/kg body weight) and three following the ingestion of ...

Effects of Ramadan observance on repeated cycle ergometer sprinting and associated inflammatory and oxidative stress responses in trained young men

Aim: was to assess the effects of Ramadan observance upon repeated sprints and associated inflammatory and oxidative stress responses. Methods: Ten young trained boxers were tested during a control period (C), at the end of the first week (R-1), and during the fourth week of Ramadan observance (R-4). On each occasion, they performed three vertical jumps, 10 x 6 s repeated sprints on a cycle erg...

Effects of Creatine and Sodium Bicarbonate Coingestion on Multiple Indices of Mechanical Power Output During Repeated Wingate Tests in Trained Men.

This study investigated the effects of creatine and sodium bicarbonate coingestion on mechanical power during repeated sprints. Nine well-trained men (age = 21.6 ± 0.9 yr, stature = 1.82 ± 0.05 m, body mass = 80.1 ±12.8 kg) participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, counterbalanced, crossover study using six 10-s repeated Wingate tests. Participants ingested either a placebo (0.5 g·kg(...

Interactive Effects of the Carbon Paper, Sodium Bicarbonate and Oral Contraceptive Pills on Morphine Urine Test

Abstract Background and objectives: A major problem for labs. esp. medico legal centers is drug test false positive and negative results. Using carbon paper, sodium bicarbonate or oral contraceptive pills (OCP) are common among addict people to make the results negative. Therefore, we decided to evaluate the effect of carbon paper, sodium bicarbonate or OCP on morphine urine test. Material and ...

The Recovery of Repeated-Sprint Exercise Is Associated with PCr Resynthesis, while Muscle pH and EMG Amplitude Remain Depressed

The physiological equivalents of power output maintenance and recovery during repeated-sprint exercise (RSE) remain to be fully elucidated. In an attempt to improve our understanding of the determinants of RSE performance we therefore aimed to determine its recovery following exhaustive exercise (which affected intramuscular and neural factors) concomitantly with those of intramuscular concentr...
